The Inaugural Age Music Victoria Genre Awards 2013 Nominees

The diversity of Victoria’s contemporary music scene will be celebrated next week with the inaugural The Age Music Victoria Genre Awards. For the first time ever, Victoria’s best genre music will be celebrated in the one event. These 11 genre-based awards are in addition to the 11 publicly-voted awards which will be announced in November.

Patrick Donovan, CEO of Music Victoria, said the 11 new awards were introduced because genre artists were often overlooked in the public voting of the former EG Awards, now known as The Age Music Victoria Awards in a new partnership between The Age and the state’s peak body for contemporary music.

“These 55 artists represent the best genre-based music over the last 12 months, and celebrate the wonderful diversity of Victoria’s contemporary music scene,” said Donovan. “Many of them will be nominated for the public awards as well, which the public can vote on from 11th October, but they deserved to be celebrated in their own right.”

Eleven expert panels spent the last six weeks debating the best music across 11 genres, from jazz to hip hop, global and heavy, and agreed on the top five releases and acts, which can now be revealed.

Stalwarts including Archie Roach, Russell Morris, Shane Howard, Allan Brown Trio are rubbing shoulders with younger acts such as Hiatus Kaiyote, Client Liaison and Yung Warriors.

Adrian Basso, PBS General Manager said “PBS is delighted to present the inaugural Age Music Victoria Genre Awards, which celebrates the rich tapestry of music we have here, right at our doorstep. As a radio station dedicated solely to music, in all of its diversity, it’s fantastic to see this new initiative take flight – recognizing a highly talented pool of musicians, which we are so lucky to have here in Victoria. This is certainly well worth beating the drum loudly about.”

The winners of The Age Music Victoria Genre Awards presented by PBS will be announced at an event next Thursday 10th October, along with the announcement of the 55 nominees of the main publicly-voted awards. The public can vote for their favourite music in the main awards from 11th October to 15th November at The Age online.

Good luck to all the nominees for the Age Music Victoria Genre Awards!
