Forte Mag - This State We're In #2 23 Sep 2016
Great people of FORTE, g’day! I had a blast putting together the first State We’re In colum in September, thanks for giving #2 a graze. Things have stepped into overdrive at Music Victoria in the lead up to The Age Music Victoria Awards and The After Party at 170 Russell, Melbourne on 16 November 2016. There are still some tickets available for what will be a cracking night showcasing Victoria’s over achievers in contemporary music. Earlier in the night, awards will be dished out to the finest purveyors and hosts of live music in the lands, including Best Regional Act, Best Regional Venue, Best Festival and many more. Voting opens to the public (including YOU!) on 7 October 2016 and closes 4 November 2016. Help your fav artist, venue, festival, song or album up by having your say. And, of course, come along to The After Party for a mid-week boogaloo for the ages.
Past winners include Courtney Barnett, King Gizz, Adalita, C.W. Stoneking, Cosmic Psychos, Bridge Hotel Castlemaine, and Golden Plains Music Festival (only scratching the surface). This year at The After Party we will be treated to performances by the Melbourne Ska Orchestra (ah-MAZING), Camp Cope and Tash Sultana, as well as our very own EG AllStars (featuring members of the RockWiz Band) backing the likes of Paul Dempsey, Gareth Liddiard (The Drones), Kylie Auldist, the Pierce Brothers, REMI, Alex Lahey, Gawurra and Freya Josephine Hollick. Damn.
Music Victoria is super excited to be heading to Geelong in the next few months for a reflective panel outlining the city and area’s musical lineage and cultural importance. Geelong has long since been producing leaders in punk, hard rock, garage and psych music, and has given the world the likes of G.O.D, Bored!, Magic Dirt, Warped and King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard. Drawing on three generations deep of Geelong musicians, label owners, journalists and bookers, the panel will offer APRA AMCOS and Music Victoria members and others within the local music community a unique opportunity to gain insight into and from their own scene - present and past - offering information on pathways, booking shows, songwriting, circulating your music independently and solidifying a sense of confidence to self-organise and create something special. This is one not to miss, more info to follow.
MV continues to focus on helping forge touring connections across the state and beyond, and upskilling non-metro live music practitioners and venues. Watch this space…
This month we shine a light on The Drones, legendary punk band who are now located in regional Victoria. Frontman, Gareth Liddiard, will be performing a tune at The After Party with the EG AllStars following the release of their critically acclaimed album ‘Feelin’ kinda free’ earlier this year.
Gig of the Month
Alex Lahey Thursday 6 October, Karova Lounge
Alex will rock out her guitar-driven power pop jams as part of her first national headline tour. I guarantee that you have heard her on the wireless, and she slayed the industry folk with band up at BIGSOUND in Brisvegas. Alex will have funky indie popsters Frida and Anna Oliphant Wright warming things. Another Thursday night blowout!
