Music Victoria Call for Expressions of Interest for First Nations Board Director

Music Victoria is seeking expressions of interest from First Peoples to join their Board of Directors. This is a voluntary position.

Having recently participated in Creative Victoria’s Fair Play Program, the organisation is committed to ensuring representation and support to First Nation's musicians and businesses to support Self-Determination and First Nations leadership within the music sector.

Specifically over the next six months, Music Victoria will be prioritising First Nations voices in an effort to attain long term equity within the industry. This is an exciting opportunity for a First People’s person to influence and advise Music Victoria on its strategic direction, its diversity and equity work and the needs of First Peoples.

Music Victoria’s mission is to enhance the positive impact contemporary music has on social, cultural and economic outcomes for all Victorians by supporting and providing opportunities to Victorian musicians, music professionals and businesses. It currently represents over 3,000 members comprised of musicians, venues and festivals, music industry professionals, businesses, local government and music fans.

Music Victoria currently supports First Nations artists and businesses through professional development, advocacy, the Music Victoria Awards, the Victorian Music Development Office’s First Nations Office and development programs such as Blak Sound. The First Nations Board Director will help ensure that these programs and other strategies enshrine long term equity for First Peoples within the organisation and its influence in the music industry, whilst ensuring adherence to cultural protocols.

In line with our rules of association, the board will co-opt the new Board member based on our need to increase capacity in the following key skills:

- Legal, risk and governance
- Leadership
- Marketing and communications
- Regionally based

The position will run until the Annual General meeting held in early December, when the candidate will have the opportunity to nominate for election for a position of three years.

Criteria

The ‘Criteria’ for these Board positions is as follows:

  1. An acknowledgement and signing upon application (in anticipation) of the Music Victoria Directors’ Code of Conduct declaration: https://www.musicvictoria.com.au/assets/Commitments%20to%20Individual%20and%20Collective%20Behaviours.pdf
  2. Demonstrated experience and understanding of good organisational governance and especially:
    • The leadership role of a Board, and of its Directors
    • Understanding of the needs of - and opportunities for - First Nations artists and businesses
    • The capacity to focus on strategic rather than operational issues, and corresponding ability to distinguish between matters for the Board and matters for management
    • The development of innovative ideas
    • The cooperation and teamwork of a Board of Directors
    • The understanding of the value of diversity and inclusion to good governance
    • The work and meeting preparations of a Board Director
  3. An appreciation for, and understanding of, the Victorian music industry and the role that it plays across the state and within the nation.
  4. Be a member of Music Victoria.
  5. A proven successful background in strategy and/or previous experience or similar role on a board.

Additional Information and Instructions

 

  • The Music Victoria Board has up to 9 Directors, six elected by the members for three year terms and up to three appointed by the Board for one year at a time. Directors can serve a maximum of nine consecutive years.
  • Music Victoria is committed to diversity and inclusion on its Board of Directors. Further;
    • Reflective of the music industry’s base and endeavors, Music Victoria also encourages expressions of interest from under-represented communities.
    • Expressions of interest from metropolitan and regional areas of Victoria are equally encouraged.
  • In essence, Board meetings are held quarterly on Tuesday nights at 6:30pm at the Music Victoria offices in Collingwood (or via zoom). The nature of the organisation at its current stage of evolution is that there are required commitments of Director work/input in-between meetings. Directors can be assigned to various roles/portfolios/sub-committees within the business. The First Nations board member would be expected to advise on First Nations support of the organization, to participate in some strategic meetings with Music Victoria staff and First Nations industry.
  • In promoting the above ‘Criteria’, the Music Victoria Board, has considered:
    • Music Victoria’s strategic planning.
    • Music Victoria’s good governance principles that embrace best practice of a skills-based Board.
    • The current make-up of the Board.
    • The needs of Music Victoria in its organisational evolution.
    • The Board’s self-assessment of its skills and performance.

  • Expression of interest should include a 1-page CV, a minimum of one reference or testimonial and up to a further 2-page covering letter / submission addressing the above ‘Criteria’.
  • If the candidate would prefer to apply verbally rather than through a written application, that can be arranged.
  • Expression of interest must be accompanied by a signed copy of the Music Victoria Directors’ Code of Conduct declaration (in anticipation).
  • At its discretion, a sub-committee of the Board will conduct candidate interviews before the Board’s finalisation of any appointment(s).
