Music Victoria is partnering with Support Act to present Rewire: Creative Conflict & Communication, a free mental health workshop delivered in person at CY Space in Collingwood Yards and online on Wednesday 24 September 6:00pm-7:30pm.
In the creative industries, conflict comes with the territory. From clashing visions in the studio, to tough feedback, rejection, and high-pressure collaborations, the way we navigate tension can make or break both our work and our wellbeing.
Support Act psychologist Dr Ash King, with coach and counsellor Bree Baker, will guide participants through the art of handling conflict with confidence and compassion.
We’ll explore how to cope with criticism and rejection, how to manage differences of opinion without derailing creative momentum, and how to turn challenging conversations into opportunities for clarity, collaboration, and growth.
Through practical tools and real-world reflections, artists will leave with strategies to protect their mental health, strengthen communication, and keep creativity flowing — even in the heat of disagreement.
*75-minute hybrid workshop (with the option to join in person or online)
Presented by Support Act and Music Victoria
This event is delivered with support from Creative Workplaces and Creative Victoria
This week, the Productivity Commission released its Interim Report – Harnessing Data and Digital Technology. Buried in the report is a proposal for a major change to Australian copyright law: a new “fair dealing” exception for text and data mining (TDM).
If implemented, this would allow AI companies to legally mine Australian songs, stories, art, research and other creative works, without consent or payment, to train their algorithms. It would mean vast datasets of creative material could be scraped, copied and mimicked by machines, with no licensing or acknowledgement of the original creators.
WHY IT MATTERS
The cultural and economic impact would be devastating.
As APRA AMCOS, ARIA and PPCA have already warned, this proposal undermines the foundation of intellectual property rights that Australian artists rely on. It:
MUSIC VICTORIA'S POSITION
This is not innovation - it's theft and it’s exploitation.
Music Victoria stands with Australian songwriters, performers and creators in rejecting this proposal. We support the development of ethical, responsible AI, but it must be built on consent, transparency and fair remuneration.
Have Your Say – Submissions Close 5pm AEST, Monday 15 September
We urge everyone in the music sector to speak out.
Make your submission here: pc.gov.au/inquiries/current/data-digital#interim and tell the Commission to protect, not exploit, Australian music.

Music Victoria acknowledges the Traditional Owners, the Wurundjeri People of the Kulin Nation, on whose unceded land we advocate, support and celebrate on. We pay our deep respects to Elders past and present, and all Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander artists and communities. We acknowledge them as the first artists, the first musicians, and the first creators of culture. We deeply respect the role that music and songlines play in the continuation of their culture for the past 60,000+ years.
Live music is a significant part of Victoria’s culture – and Music Victoria has identified an opportunity to help music venues increase the accessibility of their spaces. With support from City of Melbourne and City of Yarra, Music Victoria led the Accessible Music Venues project, to assist venues to build their knowledge and identify ways to improve their onsite and online accessibility.
The live music industry has an estimated $3.5B value and contributes to Melbourne’s thriving night-time economy. State government has also “placed creativity at the heart of Victoria’s recovery and prosperity”. Working with access consultants and advisors Morwenna Collett, Amanda Lawrie-Jones and Olivia Muscat, the project assessed the online and on-site accessibility of live music venues across these precincts, with the goal of helping venues identify areas for improvement and investment.
The project’s ultimate goal was to provide Deaf and Disabled audiences, artists and staff more equitable access to Melbourne’s live music industry. The project worked with 31 City of Melbourne and City of Yarra music venues online and 7 venues on-site, the project provided specialised training and recommendations to each participant.
This project helped venues identify:
The project emphasises that "access starts online", advocating for digital accessibility as well as physical. By focusing on ‘achievable accessibility’, this project aimed to demonstrate that solutions to access barriers exist and many can be implemented with budget, heritage or building constraints.
